Among these wonders, Wayag holds a special place in the hearts of travelers. Its iconic karst islands rising from emerald waters have become a symbol of Raja Ampat’s wild beauty.
But as of mid-2025, Wayag — along with Wofoh Island and Aljui Bay — is temporarily closed due to local community protests.
At Wisesa Liveaboard, we believe our guests deserve full transparency. Here’s what happened, what it means for your cruise, and why your adventure in Raja Ampat remains just as magical.
In June 2025, the Indonesian government revoked the permits of several nickel mining companies in northern Raja Ampat (Kawe, Manuran, and nearby islands). This landmark decision followed strong advocacy from Indigenous leaders, NGOs such as Greenpeace, and environmental organizations determined to protect Raja Ampat’s fragile ecosystem — part of a UNESCO Global Geopark.
While this was a victory for conservation, it also created economic challenges for some Indigenous groups who previously relied on mining. In response, two tribes — including the Kawe people — launched a peaceful but firm protest. As part of their demonstration, they blocked access to Wayag, Wofoh, and Aljui Bay.
It’s important to understand:
This decision was made independently by these two communities.
The majority of other local tribes and stakeholders continue to welcome responsible, sustainable tourism.
All other regions of Raja Ampat remain open, safe, and accessible.
For now, we cannot include Wayag in our itineraries. If the situation changes before your departure, we will gladly add it back — fingers crossed!

Departure dates, duration, and comfort onboard Wisesa are unaffected.
The closure impacts only the far north (Wayag, Wofoh, Aljui Bay).
All other highlights of Raja Ampat — from Misool’s lagoons to the Fam Islands, Mioskon, and countless pristine reefs — remain fully open.
Whether you are joining us for a snorkeling cruise in Raja Ampat or a diving liveaboard adventure, the spirit of exploration, discovery, and connection with nature will remain at the heart of your journey.
Although it is disappointing not to visit Wayag for now, this closure is also a reminder of the deep bond between people and nature in Raja Ampat. Indigenous communities are exercising their right to protect their ancestral lands and waters.
